About Pebble Beach Golf Links

Pebble Beach Golf Links opened on February 22, 1919, on the cliffs above Carmel Bay, part of the Hotel del Monte resort lands that Samuel F.B. Morse took over days later when he formed the Del Monte Properties Company. It was laid out by two champion amateur golfers rather than professional architects: Jack Neville, whose aim was to put as many holes as possible along the rocky coastline, and Douglas Grant. Today it is a public course owned by the Pebble Beach Company, and in 2001 it became the first public course ranked No. 1 in America by Golf Digest. This clifftop public course has hosted six U.S. Opens (1972–2019), five U.S. Amateurs, and the 2023 U.S. Women's Open. Tom Watson's chip-in on the 17th to beat Nicklaus in 1982 and Tiger Woods's 15-stroke runaway in 2000 are among its signature moments. Jack Nicklaus's near-ace 1-iron off the 17th flag in 1972 remains iconic.
