Spyglass Hill Golf Course

Est. 1966 · Robert Trent Jones, Sr. (1966)
Why we love this place

Spyglass is two great courses stitched into one round: wild dunes by the sea, then a hushed climb into the pines. We love that it never lets you settle. The names off Treasure Island are pure fun, but the golf is dead serious, and finishing even par here feels like you stole something.

About Spyglass Hill Golf Course

Robert Trent Jones, Sr. carved Spyglass Hill out of the Del Monte Forest and opened it in March 1966, drawing its name and hole titles from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The design splits into two distinct worlds: the opening five holes tumble through exposed seaside sand dunes with a links character, then the routing climbs into a dense corridor of Monterey pines for the remaining thirteen. Long considered one of the sternest tests in American public-access golf, it joined the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am (now the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am) rotation just a year after opening and remains part of it today, regularly ranking as the hardest course in the event. Narrow tree-lined corridors, small elevated greens, and coastal wind combine to make Spyglass a course that professionals respect and amateurs remember, part of Samuel F.B. Morse's original vision of golf ringing the peninsula.
