University of Michigan Golf Course

Est. 1931 · Alister MacKenzie (with Perry Maxwell)
Why we love this place

Getting to tee it up on genuine Alister MacKenzie ground is a privilege, and this one comes with a view of the Big House. We love that Michigan has protected a piece of golf-architecture history right on campus, where students and fans can walk the same strategic contours the master imagined.

About University of Michigan Golf Course

The University of Michigan Golf Course is one of the rare American designs by the legendary Alister MacKenzie, who crafted it in the late 1920s in collaboration with his partner Perry Maxwell. Regents played the unfinished layout in the fall of 1930, and the course officially opened in the spring of 1931, drawing immediate acclaim as one of the finest in the country. Draped across a sloping site overlooking campus and the city, it offers memorable views toward Michigan Stadium, 'The Big House.' At the time it was only the fourth course built on a college campus, and it remains among a small handful of surviving MacKenzie designs in the United States. MacKenzie, whose resume includes Augusta National and Cypress Point, brought his St. Andrews-inspired ideals of strategy and natural contour to Ann Arbor.
