Hartford · CT
Est. 1927 · Devereux Emmet (front nine, 1927); Robert "Jack" Ross (back nine, 1930); restored by Matt Dusenberry (2016)
Why we love this place

We love Keney because it proves a city course can be special. Devereux Emmet's Golden Age bones were saved rather than bulldozed, and the 2016 restoration brought back the Redan, tile-lined bunkers and quirky character, all tucked inside a historic Hartford park at a public price. It's golf history that belongs to everyone.

About Keney Golf Course

Keney Park Golf Course opened on October 13, 1927, giving Hartford a second public layout to ease crowding at Goodwin Park. Devereux Emmet, one of the leading architects of golf's Golden Age, laid out the first nine inside Keney Park for a city outlay of about $1,500, and city engineer Robert "Jack" Ross added the second nine around 1930. Green fees at the start were 35 cents for nine holes. Over the second half of the century the course declined under a series of managers, and the city eventually ended its contract and launched a full overhaul of the course and clubhouse. Matt Dusenberry's firm rebuilt greens, tees and bunkers, added irrigation and drainage, and stretched the par-70 layout to roughly 6,450 yards, leaning into Emmet's style with features such as a Redan with tile-lined bunkers. The course reopened on April 29, 2016, after a three-year renovation, and Golf Inc. ranked it among the year's best public course renovations.
