About Chester Washington Golf Course

Opened in 1928 as the Western Avenue Public Golf Course, this L.A. County muni became one of the first courses in Southern California to desegregate and carries deep African-American golf history. In the 1950s it was a home course for Black pros Bill Spiller and Teddy Rhodes and drew Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson; a 1955 dispute there helped force integration of all county-owned courses. It was here that Spiller and Rhodes met activist Maggie Hathaway. In 1982 Supervisor Kenneth Hahn renamed it for Chester Washington, publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel.
