Est. 1928 · Tom Winton
Why we love this place
Tom Winton squeezed a full eighteen onto a long, narrow strip of Yonkers, and the result is a shot-maker's course full of water, small greens and back-and-forth character. We love Sprain Lake for its 1920s roots and its proof that county golf can be clever.

About Sprain Lake Golf Course
Sprain Lake Golf Course is one of the six eighteen-hole courses run by Westchester County's parks department, set on East Grassy Sprain Road in Yonkers. Tom Winton, the architect behind several of Westchester's county courses, laid it out in 1928 on a long, narrow site, running stretches of holes out in one direction and back in the other to fit the land. The result is a par-70 course of roughly 6,000 yards with small greens, rolling terrain, many water hazards and a number of genuinely demanding holes, so accuracy matters far more than length. As a county course it offers public access at resident and non-resident rates, and it has drawn praise in recent years for improvements to its conditioning.
